Why You Should Trust Us
Because we’re parents too, but this is not the only reason! For this pocket diaper buyer’s guide, we spoke to 5 industry leading experts including a renowned pediatrician and environmentalist, and all highly recommend using pocket diapers.
During our research, we visited several reputable websites such as baby.com and performed diligent research by reading several editorials on cloth diapering and how to buy the best cloth diapers.
Apart from its numerous benefits, the biggest perk of going the cloth/pocket diapering way is that you’re already ready for #2, whenever they choose to make their debut!
Should You Get This?
Cloth diapers have become increasingly popular ever since their inception, but this surge of appeal has also garnered a fair share of misconceptions. So the big question you’re faced with is whether cloth diapers are right for you? And if you like efficiency and convenience, then pocket diapers are your best bet.
A pocket diaper is a type of cloth diaper that is easy to use and maintain. In fact, modern cloth diapers are just as easy to use as their disposable counterparts, with the added benefits of washing them with a load of laundry.
Modern cloth diapers such as our top pick are convenient and versatile considering they can be ordered in several designs, adjustable sizing, and even in a choice of snap or hook and loop enclosures.
Compared to disposable diapers, they are arguably better at containing messes, and offer a highly adjustable and comfortable fit with thick elastic at the legs and back.
If you’ve ever had to run out in the middle of the night to restock or watched for sales on disposable diapers, or better yet had to drag a 60 lb bag of poop to the curb, making the switch to pocket diapers will make life as a parent a whole lot easier.
There are several different types of cloth diapers including all in one cloth diapers, fitted cloth diapers, hybrid cloth diapers and pocket diapers. Basically, with pocket diapers, there’s no more opening up the wallet or getting in the car to restock, simply wash, dry and voila you have a fresh pair of diapers to work with.
How We Picked?
Deciding to go with pocket cloth diapers is possibly the best decision you can make for your baby and yourself. But with the variety of diapers available, it is important that you choose the right one for your baby’s tushy.
There are several factors that come into play when buying the best pocket diapers, and these are the aspects we looked at when determining our picks. Just like the name suggests, a pocket diaper serves as a pocket between the lining and diaper cover.
The pocket is then stuffed with absorbent pads, which need to be replaced every time your baby soils themselves. This type of cloth diaper is made of a waterproof cover and drying polyester lining, which is the first thing we looked, and must be friendly to your baby’s skin.
Next, the type of fastening is another important aspect to consider and the two most pocket diaper fasting options are snap and Velcro.
Regardless of which one you choose, both are easy to use and are much better than using pins. Adding to this, Velcro and snaps make it easy to fit the diaper on your child, adjust it according to their size and are easy to remove.
We also looked at how convenient the diaper was to use considering the lighter they are makes them more convenient to clean.
Adding to this, this feature also results in fast drying after washing so you can buy a few cloth pocket diapers and reuse them quicker as opposed to buying a whole bunch of low quality diapers.
With regards to the absorbent pads, you can fit as many as you like, and this number will completely depend how often your baby soils themselves. These pads also prevent moisture and consequently prevent diaper rash that might occur from a wet diaper.
Given that you can stuff several pads into one single pocket diaper, they are able to absorb high volumes of liquid, making them a great choice especially for heavy wetters.
Apart from being lightweight, pocket diapers must also be durable, which makes them compatible with HE washing machines and less susceptible to wear and tear resulting in longer service life.
Another notable feature of cloth pocket cloth diapers is that you can in most cases choose the design or they arrive also suited with elegant designs and appealing colors.
Take for example our best pick – Rumparooz G2, which can be ordered in several different size bundles including 12 and 8 packs.
Take note that the pocket diaper will only get bulky with the more stuff you add so to keep it light, simply stuff less in the pocket.
How We Tested?
Fact is that pocket style cloth diapers do somewhat resemble disposables, where there’s a neat outer shell that you stuff uber-absorbent inserts into.
The first thing we tested were the Velcro and snaps and on babies ranging between 15 lbs to 35 lbs.
To give you a rough idea with regards to size, one baby in our test weighed 16 lbs at four months and another 33 lbs at six months, but wore the same size pocket diapers. As mentioned earlier, these diapers require inserts, and you can even buy several other inserts and doublers including cotton, hemp flushable.
Using the best inserts for pocket diapers will depend on personal preference, and if you have no clue where to start, we’ve explained briefly the different types here. For our test however, we decided to keep things simple while being reasonably efficient and went with two microfiber inserts.
Unlike disposables, you can’t use diaper rash creams with cloth pocket diapers, not that you’ll need them as long as you use the right cloth diaper detergent. We did also test the Rumparooz G2 against leakage and it came out a pure winner.
It was used on a range of ages and sizes starting from infants to toddlers up to 3 year olds, and even an active male toddler with the included 6r soaker, and there were no signs of leaks whatsoever.
We did have a small incident with a 3 year old girl with the one size soaker, after which we doubled up on the protection by using both soakers together.
Lastly, it is important to wash cloth diapers as recommended by the manufacturer, but the most common and effective process would be to cold soak or pre-wash them first, run a regular cycle with hot water with diaper friendly detergent.

Our tests proved that the pocket diapers on our list when washed appropriately repelled all stains and odor and came off smelling fresh as ever.
Our Pick – Rumparooz G2
The award winning Rumparooz G2 pocket diaper is designed for simplicity, and comes to you chemical and waste free and at an affordable cost. Conceived in 2016, the Rumparooz lineup of cloth diapers was the first of their kind to boast inner gusset leak proof technology and due to this surge of appeal is now sold worldwide.
Brought to you by Kanga Care – a company that is now rolling into its 9th successful year of providing an environmentally conscious and healthy way for diapering, Rumparooz can be ordered in three different cloth diapering options namely an All-in one diaper – Lil Joeys suited for newborns up to 12 lbs, diaper cover and the Rumparooz G2 perfect for babies from 6.5 lbs to 35+ lbs.
One of the notable features of the Rumparooz G2 is that it offers four distinct sizes complete with an adjustable snap rise. But what makes the Rumparooz G2 all in one cloth diaper stand out from its competition is its dual inner leg gussets, which are sewn roughly about an inch inside the diaper.
These highly efficient gussets do exactly what the company claims “contains what comes out of the baby within the diaper”. And these aren’t your regular gussets seen on cheaply crafted cloth diapers, they are soft against your baby’s skin, and are layered with the same thick microchamois that lines the diaper.
Considering that the Rumparooz G2 pocket diaper wicks moisture away from the skin, your baby will just be as dry as when you first put this pocket diaper on.
The outside of this pocket diaper is crafted of waterproof TPU, and can be adjusted easily using the snap down rise that has four rows of snaps. Considering this is a pocket diaper, is has an opening for the inserts.
Speaking of inserts and another area, the Rumparooz G2 takes home the gold as it comes with two inserts. First is a one size microterry 6r soaker that contains snaps on it, making it easy to adjust the sizing.
The other insert is designed for newborns, and you can do one of two things with it.
First, you can snap it onto a one size insert for extra absorbency and next insert it into a diaper of a newborn. It is worth highlighting that the 6r soaker is two soakers into one so you double up on the protection for the same price.
Adding to this, the Rumparooz G2 pocket diaper features a “Poop Scoop”, which is basically a ridge across the back that offers extra protection against those awful up the back poop leaks.
Regardless of which diaper you choose, it must offer an excellent fit, and this is another area where the Rumparooz G2 doesn’t disappoint. It can be as absorbent or as trim as you need it to be owing to the various options provided and with regards to comfort, the adjective that best describes it is “soft”.
The Rumparooz G2 pocket diaper has 2 rows of snaps on the waist and 4 for the rise, making it easier to get the right fit as your baby grows.
The Rumparooz G2 scores high when it comes to eco-health, and in terms of numbers that’s 8 out 10.
Kanga Care – the company behind the Rumparooz G2 is known for producing products that appeal to parents seeking more natural and eco-friendly cloth diapering options, and this is what you can expect from the G2.
If you’re looking for a highly absorbent pocket diaper that’s good for both daytime and naps, look no further than the Rumparooz G2.
Flaws But Not Deal Breaker
Although the Rumparooz G2 surpassed all tests we put it through, there are a few things worth clarifying.
As mentioned earlier, this pocket diaper comes with two inserts, both of which contain TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane) for waterproofness.
The 6r soaker we tested is composed of 20% polyamide and 80% polyester, and although both inserts are crafted of synthetic materials, the use of TPU is something we’ve rarely seen in cloth diapers.
TPU is a known elastomer, and contrary to myths and reports is not only biodegradable, but also heat bonded rather than chemically bonded polyurethane laminate (PUL) used in some other cloth diapers.
Next issue we found consumers gripe about is the price of the Rumparooz G2, but if you want the best for your baby, then we can’t recommend a better option.
This diaper outshines in terms of performance, comfort and quality, and provides you with substantial savings over its lifespan compared to disposables and other cloth diapers.
All diapers are prone to get clogged, and this applies to the Rumparooz G2 as well.
If stripping them now and then doesn’t get rid of the issue, it might be the right time to replace the inserts with new ones from Kanga Care.
And keep in mind that the company offers an excellent warranty on all its products including the Rumparooz G2 so if you notice any manufacturer defects, you know you’re in good hands.
